Crocodilian Biology

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/fun/gators_flash.html

Description

This site specifically addresses the similarities and differences between crocodiles and alligators. Students can click on “begin” to start their learning adventure of these two reptiles. On this screen, the alligator is on the top and the crocodile is on the bottom. Students can click on the arrows on the alligator to learn about its jaws, teeth, snout, front feet, hind feet, skin, and tail. Then they can click on the same parts for the crocodile. Under the “Learn More” section for each reptile, students can click on the boxes numbered 1, 2, and 3 to get more information about their diet, habitat, and behavior, respectively.

Using the Resource

The information on this site focuses on classroom lessons taught in biology. It is a great resource to learn more about crocodiles and alligators. This site could be used simply as a follow up to studying other reptiles or animals. Or, it could be used as a starting point to get students thinking about the similarities and differences of animals. They can then select animals they think are similar (i.e., mice and rats; foxes and dogs; etc.) and write a research paper about them using guidelines about the animals’ diet, habitat, behavior, body structure, and any other important information. If time allows, students could prepare a 5- to 10-minute presentation that includes diagrams and photos of the animals they selected.
